Back Pain and Sciatica Q&A

What is back pain?

Back pain is discomfort, aching, or stiffness that affects any part of your spine.

Your spine has vertebrae (bones), vertebral discs, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. These tissues support the weight of your upper body and help you perform various motions, like reaching, bending over, and twisting.

These activities may result in trauma, inflammation, or general wear-and-tear as you get older. Fortunately, there are various noninvasive treatments that can help you feel better.

What causes back pain?

At Chirowell, Dr. Chang treats back pain caused by:

  • Muscle and ligament strains
  • Bulging or ruptured discs
  • Car accidents
  • Arthritis
  • Osteoporosis
  • Sports injuries

You might also experience back pain because of sciatica. Sciatica is a specific type of back pain that occurs when your sciatic nerve gets pinched or compressed. It’s characterized by sharp shooting or burning sensations in the lower back, buttocks, or legs. Often, sciatica pain occurs on one side of the body.

How is back pain diagnosed?

Dr. Chang asks about your symptoms, including where the pain occurs, what it feels like, and if activities like standing make it worse. Then, he examines your back and neck, looking for bruising, redness, or swelling.

Next, Dr. Chang asks you to sit, stand, and lift your legs. He also has you walk around the room. These tests help him identify the source of your pain and how much you can move before your symptoms worsen.

Lastly, Dr. Chang orders diagnostic imaging like X-rays, CT scans, or MRIs. These procedures can identify underlying issues, like herniated discs, stress fractures, or sciatica (lower back pain caused by compression of the sciatic nerve).
